A roadway mural outside Milwaukee’s City Hall that read “Defund the Police” was painted over by an anonymous group who changed the “u” to an “e,” making the mural read, “Defend the Police.”
The original mural was painted Wednesday without permission from city officials. That evening former city Alderman Robert Donovan took to social media to decry the slogan, writing, “Fixed it for you, folks!” with a picture showing the mural marked out with a thin blue line. The blue line is often seen as a symbol of the police force.
Donovan’s picture quickly spread online.
After photos of the new “Defend the Police” paint job became public, the group that painted the original mural changed it back. Jeremy Wilbur, who leads the group, claimed on Facebook,
“People keep asking us, what does defund mean? It doesn’t mean abolish…Let’s make this clear for them, we don’t hate cops.”
